Job Title: Part Time Park Ranger
Department: Public Safety
Starting Rate: $25.50
Dauphin County Public Safety is currently accepting applications for the
position of Part Time Park Ranger. The position of part time Park Ranger is an
armed safety and security position requiring advanced education and/or
experience and training. Park Rangers are charged with the patrol, safety,
security, and protection of the County Parks and all buildings, facilities and
properties of Dauphin County. Park Rangers supplement Public Safety Officers
based on operational needs. An employee in this position serves conditionally
during the probationary period and must complete and pass an agenda of formal
and informal training, instruction, and practice. The employee in this position
is responsible for but not limited to performing the following essential
functions listed below.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF JOB:
1. Patrol County Parks to ensure the safety and security of visitors and
staff.
2. Open and Lock/Secure County Parks buildings and facilities as necessary or
required.
3. Enforce County Parks Rules and Regulations.
4. Monitor buildings to ensure safety and security of building visitors and
staff.
5. Stands watches in accordance with post or detail requirements.
6. Screens building visitors for weapons and prohibited items prior to entry
using electronic devices and/or manually and secures visitors weapons
and/or prohibited items as necessary or required.
7. Observes behavior paying particular attention to suspicious persons, and
signs or indications of a disturbance.
8. Makes patrol rounds routinely both inside and outside of facilities and
checks and responds to alarm systems.
9. Identifies and reports all potential safety, structural and environmental
hazards occurring on County property.
10. Respond promptly to any requests for security services, intrusion alarms,
fire alarms, etc.
11. Summons and assists law enforcement and emergency services when necessary.
12. Administers First Aid and CPR/AED to injured or distressed persons on or
around County buildings, facilities and properties.
13. Quells disturbances and removes or assists in removing unruly visitors,
employees or any persons that need to leave the premises.
14. Opens and locks or secures doors, gates and other barriers, moveable or
secure, as necessary or required.
15. Directs building visitors to appropriate buildings, departments and/or
individuals.
16. Maintains lost and found, reports lost items and secures found items.
17. Maintains and completes required logs, reports and forms as necessary or
required.
18. Interacts with all County departments, public agencies and the general
public.
19. Operates telephone, portable radio, metal detectors and other security
related equipment.
20. Monitors County buildings via CCTV, Card Access & Fire monitoring systems.
21. Provides security for County events.
22. Required to work overtime and/or mandated hours in accordance with
operational needs.
OTHER DUTIES OF JOB:

1. Receives instruction and supervision as required and/or necessary from the
OIC and/or Supervisor regarding daily work duties.

WORKING CONDITIONS:
1. Work indoors and outdoors in adequate or adverse lighting, temperatures and
ventilation.
2. Work indoors and outdoors with average or adverse exposure to weather,
noise, stress and disruptions.
3. Normal or adverse indoor and outdoor exposure to dust/dirt.
4. Subject to working mandatory shifts, on call, or as schedule warrants due to
operational needs.
5. Potential exposure to blood borne pathogens or communicable diseases.
6. Works in conditions of potential outbursts of disruptive individuals.
PHYSICAL/MENTAL CONDITIONS/CRITICAL DEMANDS OF THE JOB:
1. Must be able to stand/walk up to 12 hours during the workday, with
occasional sitting, twisting, bending, kneeling, stooping, and reaching as
necessary in order to carry out essential job duties.
2. Must be able to infrequently resist force during a physical altercation
with another person and apply force against another person.
3. Must be able to occasionally secure a person and/or apply restraints with
or without resistance and with or without assistance.
4. Must be able to move frequently throughout the workday.
5. Must be able to occasionally lift items that weigh up to 50 lbs. from floor
to waist and from waist to chest.
6. Must be able to occasionally alternate between walking, jogging, and
running over uneven surfaces.
7. Must be able to occasionally sit for continuous periods of time as
required.
8. Must be able to frequently ascend and descend a minimum of 20 steps at a
time, throughout a shift.
9. Must be able to frequently bend and twist at the waist from either the left
or right side while standing, squatting, kneeling or sitting.
10. Must be able to infrequently move quickly, starting and stopping suddenly,
while jogging or running at full speed for 20 to 100 yards.
QUALIFICATIONS:
1. EDUCATION/TRAINING:
- Graduation from high school or an accredited equivalency program.
- Pennsylvania Lethal Weapons Training - Act 235 Certification
- First aid and CPR/ AED certification
2. WORK EXPERIENCE:
* 1 year of security, corrections or law enforcement experience or a
combination of experience and education/training in a related field
preferred.
* Experience or education/training in a conservation law enforcement related
field.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:
1. Must be able to speak and understand the English language to include
spelling, usage, and grammar.
2. Must be able to Communicate clearly, in English, orally and in writing.
3. Must possess ability to maintain confidentiality regarding Department
and/or County information and records.
4. Must possess ability to understand and apply Department and/or County
policy and directives.
5. Must possess personal integrity and honesty.
6. Must possess the ability to work effectively with associates.
7. Must possess a high degree of alertness and ability to detect problems or
potential problems.
8. Must possess knowledge and ability in the use of security equipment upon
successful training and certification, to include firearms, EDWs, chemical
agents, batons, other defensive equipment, and restraints
9. Must possess ability to maintain order and security effectively.
10. Must possess ability to react quickly and calmly in an emergency.
11. Must possess ability to enforce rules and understanding of individual and
group behavior and attitude of individuals under restraint.
12. Must possess the ability to follow oral and written instructions.
13. Must possess the ability to maintain relationships with peers, superiors,
and subordinates.
14. Must be able to obtain all training, certifications, and clearances as
required by the Department of Public Safety policy or operational needs.
15. Must possess a valid Pennsylvania Driver’s License (OLN). Driving
conditions include driving in urban, suburban, and rural environments, day
and night, adverse weather, congested traffic, construction zones and
unfamiliar routes, frequent stops, starts and turns, sitting for extended
periods while driving, entering and exiting vehicle repeatedly, maintaining
alertness and situation awareness for long durations, and complying with
all traffic laws and organizational safety policies.
