Job Description

Temporary Police Dispatcher

Primary Purpose: Provide Police, Fire, EMS, and 911 emergency communications for all police response matters in the school district. Provide alarm monitoring services and provide a secure life line for all Police Officers in the field on a 24 hours a day, 7 days a week basis.

Qualifications:

  • Education/Certification: High School Graduate or GED Required TCLEOSE Basic Telecommunicator Proficiency Certification or must acquire within 12 months of employment Must be able to pass an in-depth background check that includes but not limited to a polygraph exam. Although a Valid driver's license in not required, a reliable mode of transportation to work is required.
  • Special Knowledge/Skills: Ability to communicate clearly in English Basic dispatch working computer and software skills with dispatching experience preferred. Ability to identify, evaluate and resolve problems as well as document actions taken. Ability to work without direct supervision. Overall working knowledge of School District locations and administrative personnel. Must possess the following basic skills:
  • A. Language Skills: Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operation and maintenance instructions, and procedures manual. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of employees if called upon to do so.
  • B. Mathematical Skills: Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions and decimals.
  • C. Reasoning Ability: Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram or schedule form.

Experience: Previous dispatching experience preferred with a working knowledge of the school district.

Major Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Must perform Police Radio communications function, dispatching police units, in accordance with state mandated requirements.
  • Maintain written and computer based logs of all calls for service.
  • Receive telephone complaints, request for information or assistance and relay to appropriate personnel.
  • Prioritize calls and request for Police response.
  • Monitor alarm systems on all PISD buildings and facilities.
  • Monitor security camera systems when required on all PISD facilities.
  • Be proficient in the use of the DPS Sexual Offender data base system.
  • Dispatch Police unit(s) or other appropriate personnel to alarm sites.
  • Monitor emergency notification systems and relay information.
  • Must be proficient in the entering and removal of missing or runaway juveniles in the TCIC/NCIC computer systems and the entering and removal of stolen property.
  • Assist in initiation of the AMBER alert system and entries.
  • Enter and track all citations issued by Officers.
  • Monitor 911 systems for incoming emergency calls.
  • Monitor NCIC teletype for Homeland Security Information.
  • Maintain the security and integrity of all systems as prescribed by state and federal laws.
  • Employee must be able to participate in and pass regular audits of records and procedures.
  • Assist in the dissemination of information to Central Office Administrators and School Principals in regards to students arrested by law enforcement agencies as directed by state law.
  • During a time of crisis or emergency, the dispatchers must manage all aspects of the response by emergency personnel, including but not limited to maintaining a time log, information log, and tracking all responding resources from other agencies.
  • Must prepare and maintain records relevant to requisites of: Texas Law Enforcement Telecommunication System. (TLETS)N National Crime Information Computer System (NCIC) Texas Crime Information System (TCIC) Harris County Justice Management Information System (JIMS)
  • Working Conditions:

    • Mental Demands: Be able to verbally communicate effectively, maintain emotional control under stress and work in close quarters with other dispatchers. Receive telephone complaints and request for information and refer them to appropriate department or personnel. Employee must be able to multi-task under a variety of conditions including stressful ones.
    • Physical Demands/Environmental Factors: Frequent prolonged and irregular hours; Repetitive hand motions; prolonged use of computer; steady phone interactions; moderate standing, walking, and bending
